Dvi komandos varžosi tarpusavyje. Kiekvienoje komandoje yra nuo vieno iki ne daugiau kaip šešių žaidėjų.
Vienos komandos žaidėjai savo mediniais sviediniais, dar vadinamais kubbais, bando nuversti priešininkų komandos medinius blokelius, dar vadinamus kubbais, bet nepataikyti į karalių. Nugriauti karalių galima tik tada, kai nukrenta visi priešininkų kubbai.
Laimi komanda, kuri pirma nuverčia visus priešininkų kubbus, o paskui ir karalių.
Kubb geriausia žaisti lauke, ant pakankamai didelio smėlio, akmenų ar vejos ploto.
